PLANNING YOUR MOVE
MONTHS AHEAD: DO THE RESEARCH
- Connect to the Military Homefront Website: This site contains information about DoD installations around the world. Information is updated continuously. You can look up specific information, download a booklet, and look at pictures of the installation. In many cases, you'll also find email addresses are provided for points of contact and links to the installation's website. If you don't have access to a computer, drop by the ACS Center to use one of ours.

- Get the most up-to-date information about travel allowances and Joint Travel Regulations from the Department of Defense Per Diem, Travel and Transportation Allowance Committee's website
Discuss the move with your spouse and children: Set up an appointment with the Relocation Readiness Program at your ACS Center.
- Bring a list of questions and concerns
- Ask about sponsorship programs
Set up an appointment with your Transportation Office.
- Prepare a list of questions
- Ask about "Space A" travel, and make any necessary reservations for you and your Family
- Find out about DITY moves
- Ask about reimbursement and special pay programs
If you are hiring movers, get estimates.
- Contact the housing office at your new duty location. Ask about military and civilian housing options and availability
- If you own your home and plan to sell it, contact a realtor about putting it on the market
- If you are renting, contact your property owner and explain your schedule. Arrange to get back any security deposit
WEEKS AHEAD: PLAN AHEAD.
Obtain and keep handy copies of vital records, including:
- Immunization schedules
- Birth certificates
- Wills and other legal documents
- Health and life insurance information
Map out the route you will take. Check the internet for:
- Free maps, driving routes, and sightseeing tips
- Hotels, motels, and camping grounds
- Car rentals
- Special stops along the way
- Any military-related discounts
Inform utilities and other services
- Gas, Electric, and Oil Companies
- Newspaper Delivery
- Lawn Care Service
- Bank Or Credit Union
- Cable TV Company
Also:
- Fill out a change-of-address form at your Post Office
- Contact friends, Family and creditors about your new address
Try to reduce what you’ll need to pack. Tips include:
- Sort items into "keep" and "discard" piles
- Plan a garage sale to sell unwanted belongings
- Donate unsold items to local thrift shop, Goodwill or the Salvation Army
- Begin packing
- CHECK WITH YOUR MOVER FIRST - SOME MOVERS WILL NOT ASSUME LIABILITY FOR LOSS OF OR DAMAGE TO ANYTHING THEY DIDN’T PACK
- Be aware of weight limits
- Start with the items you use least
- Mark each box clearly with contents and assigned room
- Fill out the inventory checklist as you pack
Take care of little things:
- Fill prescriptions
- Take care of borrowed or loaned items
- Get your vehicle tuned up
DAYS AHEAD: FINAL ARRANGEMENTS.
Finish all cleaning. Leave only minor tidying (vacuuming the floor, washing the sink, etc.) for the last minute.
Check all automobile fluids, including:
- Gasoline
- Oil
- Wiper fluid
- Antifreeze
- Transmission and brake fluid
Finish packing:
- Empty the refrigerator
- Disconnect and/or remove all major appliances
- Drain any power tools and vehicles to be transported of gasoline, oil, and water
- Pack a separate box with bathroom and cleaning supplies, weather-appropriate clothing and some food
- Contact the mover (if you are using one) about the planned schedule for the departure and destination times
- Make sure you and the movers have a clear understanding about who will be responsible for what
Also:
- Try to stay well rested
- Eat right and exercise regularly to keep yourself feeling your best
- Keep all move-related documents in an easily accessible location
MOVING DAY: READY TO GO!
- Supervise the movers
- Make sure everything is packed and marked properly
- Do a final check of your home (including closets, attics, and basements/crawl spaces)
Travel safely:
- Take breaks along the way.
- Share the driving, if possible.
When you arrive at your new home:
- Supervise the unloading
- Report any missing or damaged items
- File reports with the transportation and claims office, if necessary
