"Squared Away"
1st Battalion, 11th Aviation Regiment provides air traffic support to the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence flight training mission and National Airspace System while simultaneously certifying assigned air traffic control Soldiers to Army control tower operator standards in order to support and sustain the Army Aviation community. This is accomplished through the management of 21 facilities at Fort Rucker and the surrounding community covering a training area of over 32,000 square miles of airspace.
The battalion continues to provide safe, orderly and expeditious air traffic services with administrative, logistical, operational support and navigational aid maintenance sustainment for long term aviation training support.
The battalion's motto is "Exempla Proponere" (To Set Forth Examples).
History
The 1st Battalion, 11th Aviation Regiment was constituted on August 21, 1965, in the Regular Army as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 11th Aviation Battalion. It was activated on August 23, 1965, at Fort Benning, Ga. On December 1,1968, the unit was reorganized and redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 11th Aviation Battalion. The Battalion was inactivated on September 16, 1987, in Germany and redesignated November 17, 1987, as the 11th Aviation Regiment, a parent regiment under the United States Army Regimental System. The unit was then transferred to the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command with headquarters at Fort Rucker, Ala. The Battalion received credit for fifteen campaigns during Vietnam and received numerous decorations.

Command Sgt. Maj. Jack Essig is a native of Cranston, Rhode Island and enlisted in the Army as an Aviation Operation Specialist. He completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, SC and he received his Advanced Individual Training at Fort Rucker, Alabama.
