Lt. Col. Sonya Heidt, Department of Aviation Medicine
LTC Sonya Heidt is board certified in Emergency Medicine, Aerospace Medicine, and Occupational Medicine with substantial experience in operational assignments.
She is a native of Henryetta, OK, who received her Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular Biology from Lehigh University in 2002 and was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship program as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. She served as an Active-Duty Medical Service Corps Officer (70B) for two years. She acquired a conditional release to accept a Health Professions Scholarship to complete medical school. She received her Doctor of Medicine in 2008 from the University of Oklahoma College of Health Sciences in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She completed her Emergency Medicine Residency at Fort Hood in 2011 as well as Aerospace Medicine in 2017 and Occupational Medicine in 2018, both at Fort Rucker, Alabama. She received a Master’s in Public Health from the University of West Florida in 2017.
LTC Heidt’s military assignments include her present assignment as the Director of the Department of Aviation Medicine since 2026; Aerospace Medicine Residency Program Director, Department of Aviation Medicine, Fort Rucker, AL since 2023; Command Surgeon, 13th Armored Corps Support Command, Fort Hood, Texas from 2020-2023; Brigade Surgeon, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, Fort Bragg, North Carolina from 2018-2020; Emergency Department Staff Physician, Landstuhl Army Medical Center, Landstuhl, Germany, 2013-2015; Battalion Flight Surgeon, 2-159th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion,12th Combat Aviation Brigade, Illesheim, Germany from 2011-2013 and Forward Operating Base Sharana, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from 2012-2013; Advanced Individual Training Company Executive Officer, Alpha Company 232nd Medical Battalion, Fort Sam Houston, Texas from 2003-2004, and Battalion Maintenance Officer, 168th Area Support Medical Battalion, Camp Walker, Republic of Korea from 2002-2003.
LTC Heidt’s military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (two Oak Leaf Clusters), Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal (six Oak Leaf Clusters), and the Army Achievement Medal (one Oak Leaf Cluster). LTC Heidt earned the Senior Flight Surgeon Badge, Basic Space Badge, Expert Field Medical Badge, and Parachutist’s Badge.
