1st Battalion, 13th Aviation Regiment traces its proud heritage to the Vietnam War where it began as the Delta Aviation Battalion in July 1963, at Can Tho. It was activated and re-designated the 13th Combat Aviation Battalion “Shield of the Mekong” in September 1964. In December 1967, it was assigned to the 164th Aviation Group to support combat operations for three Army of Vietnam divisions in the Mekong River Delta. The unit moved to Soc Trang in October 1968, and remained there until 1972. For their heroic actions in combat, the 13th CAB was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and Valorous Unit Award.
1-13th AR conducts Aviation Initial Entry Training to provide the Army with skilled, motivated, disciplined and fit Soldiers ready to perform in any operational environment. Additionally, 1-13th AR promotes global partnership through the reception, education and support of International Military Students; synchronizes all functions of military police, firefighters, and military working dogs; and provides administrative support for select U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence functions across Fort Rucker.

 | C Co., 1-13th Aviation Regiment “Copperheads” is responsible for providing relevant, battle-focused training for the 15P and 15Q MOS qualification courses and Aviation Life Support Equipment functional course. C Co. provides mission command and logistical support for officers, NCOs, and Soldiers attached for graduate-level aviation functional courses at AVCOE. |
 | D Co., 1-13th Aviation Regiment "Delegates" provides administrative support through headquarters staff for the 1-13th Battalion and all International Military Students assigned to AVCOE. Coordinates and executes the Field Studies Program in accordance with Army Regulation 12-15 Joint Security Cooperation Education and Training, Security Assistance Training Field Activity and DoW directives. |
 | 6th Military Police Detachment "Sentinels" conduct law enforcement, fire prevention, and critical site security to enhance public safety and force protection on Fort Rucker. On order, the 6th MPD deploys in support of contingency operations by providing law enforcement support to the combatant commander. |

Lieutenant Colonel Kyle J. Maki, a native of Memphis, Tennessee, is an accomplished Aviation Officer who received his commission from the University of Tennessee – Martin in May 2006. Following his commission, he completed flight training and the AH-64D Apache Longbow Course at Fort Rucker, Alabama.
