57th Expeditionary Signal Battalion - Enhanced

BATTALION HISTORY

The 57th Expeditionary Battalion-Enhanced (ESB-E) was constituted in the regular Army on October 18, 1927, as the 57th Signal Battalion and later activated on February 10, 1941, at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts, for service in the European theatre where it saw action in Northern Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany. The battalion was inactivated on September 29, 1945, in Germany following the defeat of the Axis powers and re-activated on May 16, 1966, at Fort Hood, Texas.

On September 27, 1990, the 57th Signal Battalion and elements of Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), 3RD Signal Brigade, were deployed to Southwest Asia (SWA) where they were attached to the 35th Signal Brigade (Corps) (Airborne), XVIII Airborne Corps, in support of Operation Desert Shield / Desert Storm. In April 1991, the 57th Signal Battalion and all other 3RD Signal Brigade assets were released from attachment and returned to Fort Hood, Texas.

On January 4, 2004, the 57th Signal Battalion and elements of HHC, 3rd Signal Brigade, were once again deployed to SWA in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II (OIF II). The battalion provided communications support throughout the Iraqi Theater which included: Baghdad, Mosul, Tikrit, Taji, Babylon, Baghdad International Airport, The Green Zone, Abu Gharib, Ramadi, Fallujah, Q'West, Irbil, An Najaf, Ad Diwaniyah, Karbala, Kirkuk, Balad and Al Asad. The battalion redeployed in January 2005.               

In October 2006, the 57th Signal Battalion deployed in support of OIF VI and redeployed in November 2007, earning a Meritorious Unit Citation Medal for its efforts. On February 20, 2008, the 57th Signal Battalion realigned under the 35th Signal Brigade headquartered at Fort Gordon, Georgia. Post realignment, the 57th Signal Battalion was transformed and re-designated as the 57th Expeditionary Signal Battalion (ESB) while fielding the Warfighter Information Network-Tactical family of equipment. In April 2009, the 57th ESB deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom 09-10 (OEF X). In January 2014, the 57th ESB returned to Afghanistan in support of OEF XIV, earning distinction again as the last Expeditionary Signal Battalion to deploy to Afghanistan as a battalion.

On April 17, 2021, the battalion was re-designated as the 57th ESB-E post-fielding of the Scalable Network Node. The 57th ESB-E remains at Fort Hood, Texas, and consists of a HHC and three Expeditionary Signal Companies-Enhanced: Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie Company.

The 57th Expeditionary Signal Battalion–Enhanced—serves as a subordinate to the 11th Corps Signal Brigade and is stationed at Fort Hood, Texas.
