Command Sgt. Maj. Waylon D. Petty

Command Sgt. Maj. Waylon D. Petty became the 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson command sergeant major June 12, 2025.
Petty previously served as the United States Army Armor School command sergeant major. He hails from San Antonio, Texas, and entered the Army in October 1999 as an armor crewman and attended One Station Unit Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
Petty served in leadership positions from tank gunner to command sergeant major. His assignments include 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Moore, Georgia, where he deployed to Kosovo in support of Operation Noble Eagle; 4th Infantry Division, Fort Cavazos, Texas, where he served as a tank commander and deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom; Houston Recruiting Battalion; 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, where he served as a platoon sergeant for a Stryker platoon and deployed twice to Iraq in support of OIF and Operation New Dawn; 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado, as a first sergeant; Ohio State University as the ROTC senior military instructor; 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas, as the command sergeant major for 3rd Battalion, 66th Armored Regiment; Bronco 40 at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin, California; and Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, as the garrison command sergeant major.
Petty’s military education includes the Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officers Course, Recruiting School, Maneuver Advanced Noncommissioned Officers Course, Battle Staff Course, Ranger School, Air Assault School, Senior ROTC Pre-Command Course, Master Resilience Trainer Course and United States Sergeants Major Course (Class 66). He has a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from University of Maryland University College.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with six oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal with five stars, Kosovo Campaign Medal, NATO Kosovo Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (fourth award), Overseas Ribbon (fourth award), Army Service Ribbon, Recruiter Ring, Air Assault Badge and the Ranger Tab.
Petty is married and has three children.
