Shemin Fitness Center now open

FORT CARSON, Colo. — The Shemin Fitness Center opened Jan. 21providing Soldiers and civilians working in the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team and 4th Combat Aviation Brigade footprints with a 66,370-square- foot gym facility. Open Monday-Friday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. in building 9429, 10119 Warfighter Road, the newest fitness center is named after Sgt. William Shemin, the first 4th Infantry Division Soldier to be awarded the Medal of Honor. A grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for Feb. 21. The Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation fitness center is geared toward the Soldier-Athlete model, with adjustable sports surfaces for multipurpose use and equipment packages that align with industry standards for athletic performance. Amenities included a rubber sport court allowing for large physical readiness training (PRT) groups and the use of training equipment on the courts, classroom and group exercise rooms for instructor-led training, a fitness module designed for Soldier-specific PRT, including free weights, dumb bell training, pulling stations and dedicated physical therapy and flexibility/mobility space, and portable turf tiles to conduct training and the Army Combat Fitness Test.
