TAP_Logo.pngMission:

Transition Assistance Program (TAP) is a Commander’s Program and a Soldier’s responsibility. TAP provides information and training to ensure transitioning Soldiers are prepared for their next step in life - whether pursuing additional education, finding a job in the public or private sector, or starting their own business. In partnership with the Department of Labor, Department of Veterans Affairs and Small Business Administration, TAP provides benefits counseling, job search training, and career planning and employment assistance, and connects Soldiers with resources needed to achieve their career goals. Family members of transitioning Soldiers are also eligible to utilize TAP services.

program:

The mandatory components of TAP are applicable for all service members who have at least 180 continuous days or more on active duty; this includes National Guard and Reserve serving on Title 10 status.

In accordance with AR 600-81, Soldiers are eligible to start using TAP services 18 months from their ETS date or 24 months from their retirement date, and are required to start no later than 12 months (365 days) from their separation date. In the event of an unanticipated separation or retirement, or a member of the Reserve Component is demobilized with less than 365 days, TAP must begin as soon as possible within the remaining period of service.

For transitioning Soldiers located remotely, more than 50 miles from a center, the TAP Virtual Center is available online 24/7. The Virtual Center also has a phone line component, available 24/7. Transitioning Soldiers can call the Virtual Center at 800-325-4715.

Is the Transitions Assistance Program mandatory?
TAP is mandatory for all Service Members, including National Guard and Reservists transitioning or being released from active duty, after serving 180 continuous days or more in accordance with Section 1142 of Title 10 U.S.C., Army Regulation 600-81 and the NDAA 2019.

Are Service members who are involuntary separated (Chaptered) required to participate in TAP?

If I’m leaving active-duty service under honorable or unfavorable conditions (i.e., med board or chapter) should I wait for the outcome before enrolling in TAP?
No, do not wait for the outcome of a medical or legal process. Begin the TAP process immediately!

Do I still need to enroll in TAP if I'm planning to reenlist?
Yes, Service members must complete the enrollment process no later than 365 days before their scheduled separation date to meet timeliness requirements. Reenlistment is not considered a declaration that you are leaving the service. Enrollment is still necessary to ensure compliance and provide adequate time for Service members to prepare for any potential transition, whether separating or reenlistment.

What if I decide to remain on active duty after enrolling in TAP?
There is no harm if a Service member decides to continue active-duty service.  All completed counseling’s and classes are good for up to three years.

Can TAP be waived?
