The Higher Education Track classes are two-day events, eight hours per day. The purpose is to help Soldiers determine career, personal and academic goals; help Soldiers determine institution factors that contribute to the selection of a higher education institution; present information about funding factors for selection of higher education institutions; and provide facts about admission. This class is only open to Soldiers that are transitioning from the military and currently going through the TAP process.
During the class Soldiers will learn to:
Determine if and how the Soldier can transfer recommended military credits. Choose a degree program. Effectively use the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Consortium. Understand the impact of Executive Order 13607, signed by the President on April 27, 2012, which established the Principles of Excellence for Educational Institutions Servicing Servicemembers, Veterans, Spouses and Other Family Members. Understand the factors that impact an institution’s graduation and retention rates. Understand the types and importance of accreditation. Search databases of Accredited Post-secondary Institutions and Programs. Understand the culture of colleges and universities and methods to explore college cultures (for example, campus tours, open houses, orientations, etc.). Understand the basic organizational structures of higher education institutions. Understand the benefits and challenges of various methods of instructional delivery such as traditional classroom instruction, online, hybrid or blended, and guided independent study. Select institutions that offer flexibility for special circumstances concerning Guard and Reserve mobilization. Identify types of Veteran support at higher learning institutions and how to research institutions providing those Veteran support services. Understand education benefits programs and eligibility, funding options, and the cost of a degree program.
