BG Patrick M. Costello, Commanding General 
Biography

BG Patrick Costello was born in Charlottesville, Virginia. He commissioned as an Air Defense Artillery Officer upon graduation from Providence College in 1997. He holds Master’s Degrees in Military Studies from the Marine Corps University and Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College. BG Costello’s most recent assignment was as the Commanding General, 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickman. BG Costello’s first assignment was with 3d Battalion (Airborne) 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, NC. After completion of the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, he was assigned to 2d Battalion, 44th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) where he served as assistant S3, and commanded Charlie Battery, 2-44 ADA during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Upon completion of command, BG Costello was assigned as SHORAD systems evaluator, Army Test and Evaluation Command, and later as Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General, Army Test and Evaluation Command, Alexandria, Virginia. Following these duties BG Costello was assigned to the Army Staff where he served as a Strategic Planner in the HQDA G-3/5/7 Army Initiatives Group, and later as Executive Officer to the Army Deputy G-3. He returned to Fort Bragg in 2009 and served as Battalion Executive Officer of 3d Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, Brigade S3, and Deputy Commanding Officer of the 108th ADA Brigade, both deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and at Fort Bragg. From May of 2013 until June of 2015, BG Costello commanded 3d Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment and deployed in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Inherent Resolve. After Senior Service College, he served as the Theater Missile Defense Chief for United States Forces Korea and Combined Forces Command. After departing Korea, BG Costello commanded the 38th ADA Brigade, Sagami General Depot Japan followed by an assignment as Deputy Director of Fires for HQDA G-3/5/7. Following HQDA G-3/5/7, BG Costello was assigned as the Executive Officer to the Secretary of the Army. He then was assigned as the Director of the Air and Missile Defense Cross Functional Team under Army Futures Command.

His military education and training include the Air Defense Artillery Officer Basic Course, Infantry Officers’ Advanced Course, Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, the Army War College Advanced Strategic Arts Program, Airborne School, Air Assault School, and the Jumpmaster Course. Awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Senior Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Combat Action Badge, Army Staff Identification Badge, and the German and Canadian parachutist badges.

BG Costello is married and has three children.
