Welcome to U.S. Army Garrison Fort A.P. Hill

Vehicles entering Fort A.P. Hill are required to have either an adult authorized identification cardholder in the vehicle or an authorized visitor pass. To obtain the pass, the vehicle operator must process through the visitor center and present the following: A valid vehicle registration, proof of current vehicle insurance, valid driver's license.

If you are a contractor or vendor arrange for your long term pass through your Contract Office's Representative or Government Employee Sponsor.

By requesting access, you are agreeing to a background check, which uses the National Crime Information Center Interstate Identification Index, a Federal Bureau of Investigation database that provides criminal histories from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

To get your background check and access pass to post you can go to the Visitors Control Center between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily. The process at the Visitors Control Center should take approximately 15 minutes per person. Please allow for this extra time when making travel plans.

Personnel under the age of 18 will not have a NCIC check conducted.

Visitors requiring a pass arriving after 4 p.m. will be unable to access the installation.

Be aware that all individuals 18 and older in the vehicle are required to have a background check and pass before being allowed to enter the installation unescorted.

Visitors with a valid pass and picture ID can access the installation at any Access Control Point during their visit. Passes are valid only for the approved time frame based on the length or frequency of your visit.

All adults are required to possess valid ID. All juveniles without valid ID must be accompanied by an adult family member.

Fort A.P. Hill Visitor Control Center is located on Route 301 just inside North Gate and is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Visitor Passes will be issued to all non-Department of Defense persons with a valid reason for entering the installation. A visitor pass can be issued for up to 90 days for all non-DoD personnel. A security-vetting process will be completed on each non-DoD individual prior to receiving a visitor pass. This includes all non-DoD passengers riding in a non-DoD person’s vehicle.

About Background Checks

In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 and Army Regulation 190-13, all visitors and uncleared contractors desiring unescorted access to Fort A.P. Hill, must be vetted through the National Crime Information Center Interstate Identification Index.

How To Request Access

To complete a background check and be issued an installation access badge you must go to the Visitor Control Center  located the Fort A.P. Hill North Gate and complete an access request form.

NCIC Correction Procedure

If you are denied access to the installation based upon information on your NCIC III check that you believe to be inaccurate or incorrect please see below for the procedures to correct the information.

Visitor Access

Visitors, contractors and vendors 18 years and older, entering Fort A.P. HIll, who do not have a DoD identification card, will be subject to a background check before being allowed entry to the installation.

Weapons Registration

All personnel (including but not limited to active duty, retired, National Guard, and reserve military and their family members; Department of Defense employees and their family members; and civilians who are not affiliated with Fort A.P. Hill) who desire to maintain, frequently use, or transport a privately owned weapon on this installation will register the weapon(s) with the Provost Marshal Office (within three duty days if the weapon is to be stored on post or if the owner intends to use the MWR hunting areas or ranges).

Real ID Act of 2005
On May 1, 2016, Fort A.P. Hill began fully enforcing the provisions of the Real ID Act of 2005. Under provisions of this act, driver's license and ID cards from certain states and territories are not valid for unescorted access to Fort A.P. Hill. Click on the following link for the Department of Homeland Security website to determine the status of each state and territory Current Status of States/Territories. Persons requesting unescorted access to Fort A.P. Hill and who present a standard license or ID from one of those states will be required to present additional documentation to verify their identity prior to being allowed access to Fort A.P. Hill.
