Command Sergeant Major Ismael Ortega hails from Nampa, Idaho. He attended Nampa High School where he graduated May 1995.

On June 28, 1999 he enlisted in the Army and completed Basic Training August 1999 at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He completed Advanced Individual Training October 1999 at Fort Lee, Virginia, earning the Military Occupational Specialty of 92Y (Unit Supply Specialist).
