Youth Sponsorship Program

Installation youth sponsorship programs facilitate the integration of military connected youth to new surroundings during moves.

Primarily directed to preteen and teenaged youth, installation youth programs give youth information and materials on programs and services available at their new location.

Where available, youth can exchange emails, talk on the phone or chat online with other youth. The youth program staff at your new installation can offer more information on the youth sponsorship program.

Families with children may also want to visit Military Kids Connect, an online community for military children and youth.

The site offers games, videos and links to teen-led installation tours.

History of Fort Polk

Camp Polk wasestablished on January 10, 1910 in accordance with War Department General Order#1. During World War II the Army trained 48 of its 91 divisions here, teachingthousands of Soldiers of the basics of combat. Generals such as Eisenhower,Patton, Bradley, and Marshall learned invaluable lessons during the LouisianaManeuvers that proved critical to their success in defeating the Axis powers.

The post closedin 1946, re-opened during the Korean War, and closed again in 1954. It reopenedfor Operation Sagebrush in 1955, the largest Army maneuver since 1941 butclosed again in 1959. In 1961, it re-opened as the Army Training Center,Infantry. It was the Army’s largest infantry training center during the VietnamWar, training over one million Soldiers. It became renowned as “Tiger Land” dueto its realistic Vietnamese-style training villages.

1975, Fort Polkbecame home to the 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized). The 5thID Soldiers formed the nucleus of the task force sent to Panama for OperationJust Cause in 1989-1990. As the Army’s mission evolved, the 5th IDdeactivated in 1992, and the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment (ACR) tookits place. The 2nd ACR deployed to the Balkans and Iraq during itstenure. On March 12, 1993, Fort Polk officially became the home of the JointReadiness Training Center (JRTC), which relocated from Fort Chaffee, Arkansas.Re-organizations in 2004 mandated that the 2nd ACR relocate to FortLewis, Washington.

Today, the JRTCand Fort Polk is the Army’s Premier Combat Training Center. JRTC providesrigorous training to rotational units and joint forces while supporting andtraining tenant and home station units. It holds 8-10 rotational training exercisesannually, each running 24 hour operations, lasting 14 to 18 days. The trainingis designed to improve readiness by providing highly realistic, stressful, joint and combined arms training across the full spectrum of conflict. The postis home to the 3d Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division; JointReadiness Training Center Operations Group; 32nd Hospital Center;519th Military Police Battalion; 46th Engineer Battalion;1st Battalion, 5th Aviation Regiment; U.S. Army Garrison;Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital; and the Dental Health Activity.

The JRTC andFort Polk has a legacy of training Soldiers since WWII. Soldiers that trainedhere have been called to serve, protect, and defend around the world, deployingto Afghanistan, Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, New Dawn, and manyother combat and support missions.

Officials anddignitaries from many countries visit the JRTC and use it as a model to buildtheir own training centers. JRTC provides opportunities for commanders to traintheir unit in an Expeditionary, Unified Action Partner (UAP) environment. Whiletraining in live-fire and force-on-force scenarios, replicating the complexPolitical, Military, Economic, Social, Information, Infrastructure, PhysicalTerrain, and Time (PMESII-PT) variables found in the contemporary operationalenvironment has been paramount. Throughout its history, Fort Polk has answeredthe Nation’s call to train its Soldiers for their missions throughout the worldand will continue to uphold the legacy of missions accomplished and livessaved.
