Winter Weather

The cooler weather is here and it's time to prepare our homes, families, and vehicles for the cold temperatures and potentially icy conditions.

A winter weather storm, whether it brings snow, ice, or extreme cold, requires preparation to manage risks like power outages, freezing pipes, and dangerous travel conditions. The most critical safety actions include staying indoors, dressing in layers, and protecting your home's pipes.

Key Safety Information & Actions

  • Protect Yourself (The 5 P's): People, Pets, Pipes, Plants, and Practice fire safety.
  • Stay Indoors: Avoid driving to prevent accidents in low visibility or on ice-covered roads.
  • Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Never use generators, grills, or charcoal heaters inside your home, basement, or garage. Generators should be operated at least 20 feet away from the house.
  • Avoid Overexertion: Shoveling heavy, wet snow or walking in deep snow can cause heart attacks; take frequent breaks.
  • Monitor Temperature: Keep a battery-operated radio to monitor for, and understand, winter storm watches (possible) and warnings (imminent).
  • Check on Others: Check on neighbors and family, particularly the elderly or those with disabilities.

Preparing Your Home and Supplies

  • Stock Up: Maintain a 3-day supply of food, water, and essential medicines, as you may be unable to travel.
  • Prevent Frozen Pipes: Let faucets drip slightly, open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around pipes, and insulate exposed pipes.
  • Power Outages: Charge mobile devices, keep a flashlight and extra batteries handy, and turn your freezer/refrigerator to a colder setting.
  • Backup Heat: If using a fireplace or space heater, ensure it is properly ventilated and keep combustible materials 3 feet away.

Winter Driving Safety

  • Avoid Travel: If you must drive, keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent fuel line freeze and ensure you have enough gas.
  • If Stranded: Stay with your car; do not try to walk to safety. Run the motor for 10 minutes every hour for heat, ensuring the exhaust pipe is clear of snow.
  • Emergency Kit: Carry a kit in your car with blankets, food, water, a flashlight, sand/kitty litter for traction, a shovel, and a scraper.

What to Know About Weather Terms

  • Winter Storm Watch: A winter storm is possible in your area.
  • Winter Storm Warning: A winter storm is occurring or will occur soon—take action.
  • Ice Storm Warning: A half-inch or more of ice accumulation is expected, which can down trees and power lines.
