WSMR Community comes out for Health Fair and Blood Drive
McAfee U.S. Army Health Clinic hosted a Health Fair and Blood Drive April 29 at the Army Community Service Building.
Lt. Col. Kelley Watts, Chief Nurse at McAfee U.S. Army Health Clinic said there is a nationwide shortage of blood, and they are really trying to get those numbers back up for donations.
“The goal for today was 100 donors to help replenish the Fort Bliss Blood Service Program.”
Watts said sometimes people think that the Armed Forces Blood Service is only for active duty, but it covers everyone to include beneficiaries who are dealing with health problems and who are also in need of blood.
With activities happening overseas the demand for blood also increases.
“Being able to highlight that need for both the active duty and everyone else in the civilian sector is helpful. It can be lifesaving.”
The Health Fair offered information on health and wellness, hearing protection, and mental health assistance. The Pharmacy also had a stand set up with information on GLP-1s which have been popular for weight loss.
Watts said there was a lot of education available for the WSMR Community, to include military readiness and support. The USO also supported the event.
