Domestic Violence Awareness 5K Run Walk

The White Sands Missile Range community came out to support the Oct. 1 Domestic Violence Awareness Proclamation Signing 5K Run and Walk event in front of Building 100.

WSMR Garrison Commander Col. Michael A. Lueckeman, Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Jimmy J. Diaz, and Deputy Garrison Commander Fred Hankerson, kicked off the event with the signing of the proclamation championing self-awareness to break unhealthy behavioral patterns and promoting early, proactive help-seeking behavior. This year’s Army theme is “Pause”.

“I appreciate you taking the time to come participate in this important event,” Lueckeman said.

“This is a very important and serious cause, so I want you to keep that in mind while you are racing today,” Lueckeman said. “The bottom line is that we treat everyone with dignity and respect and we treat everyone with kindness. We uphold that standard for everyone around us and this community does the same.”

Participants, which included members of the military, community members, and White Sands Middle School students, started the race outside Headquarters Building 100

Amanda Carreras, Army Community Service Director, thanked everyone who had a part in helping put the event together.

“Without assistance from our community partners this event would not be a successful one,” Carreras said.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is a dedicated campaign to increase installation awareness and emphasizes that every member of our Army Family deserves a safe, supportive, and respectful community.
