Colonel Steve Yamashita was born in 1971 on the island of Guam. He graduated from the University of Guam with a degree in Criminal Justice. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Military Police (MP) through the University’s ROTC program in December 1993.
COL Yamashita has held a variety of leadership and staff positions to include Platoon Leader; Company XO; Brigade S1; Company Commander; Plans Officer; Observer / Controller; Battalion S3; Battalion XO; Chief Strategic Initiatives Group (HQDA OPMG); Battalion Commander; Chief, MP Branch, Human Resources Command; Chief, Detainee Affairs Division, Joint Staff, J-37 Deputy Directorate for Special Operations, Counterterrorism and Detainee Affairs Division; and Commander, Joint Detention Group, JTF GTMO.
His duty stations include, Fort McClellan, Alabama; Daegu, Korea; Mannheim, Germany; Wurzburg, Germany; Heidelberg Germany; Fort Polk, Louisiana; Fort Carson, Colorado; Newport, Rhode Island; The Pentagon; Grafenwhör, Germany; Fort Knox, Kentucky; Fort McNair, DC; US NAVSTA Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
His awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal (1OLC), the Defense Meritorious Service medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (1 Silver OLC, 1 Bronze OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (2OLC), and the Army Achievement Medal. His badges include the Combat Action Badge, and the US Army and Australian Basic Parachutist Badges, the Army Staff and Joint Chiefs of Staff ID Badges.
He has deployed to Bosnia (Balkans Summit), Kosovo, Iraq - Operation Iraqi Freedom I, and Operation Iraqi Freedom 06-08.
COL Yamashita’s education includes the Military Police Officer Basic and Advanced Courses; Combined Arms Services Staff School; Intermediate Level Education at the Naval College of Command and Staff, Naval War College; and Senior Service College at the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy, National Defense University. He received Masters in National Security and Strategic Studies and a Master of Science in National Resource Strategy.
He is married to his high school sweetheart and they have two children.
