BG Jean-Pierre Fagué Deputy Commanding General - Readiness
Brigadier General Jean-Pierre Fagué was born in 1969 in Draguignan, France. He entered the French Military Academy of Saint-Cyr Coëtquidan in 1989, and he was commissioned as an armored cavalry officer in 1992.
His service within the French Army’s tactical units include assignments both in France and in French forces prepositioned in Africa. He served as Troop Commander and Regimental Chief of operations in the Marine Armored Cavalry and Infantry Regiment (RICM) in Poitiers, as Platoon Commander in the 43rd Marine Infantry Battalion in Abidjan in the Republic of Ivory Coast, as Battalion Commander of the 23rd Marine Infantry Battalion in Dakar, Senegal. He served as Chief of Staff of the French Regional Cooperation Joint Task Force for West Africa from 2011 to 2013.
His operational experience includes deployments in the Balkans, to Sarajevo in the former Yugoslavia in 1995 with the UNPROFOR 5th Infantry Battalion and in Kosovo in 1999-2000 at KFOR Headquarters within LANDCENT then EUROCORPS HQs. In Africa, he was deployed to the Democratic Republic of the Congo within MONUC in Kinshasa as the Chief G3 for Operations Support in 2004, as Chief of Future Operations at French Operation Licorne’s joint headquarters in Abidjan in 2006-2007, as Chief of the Joint Operations Centre in N’Djamena, Chad, during the operation to evacuate French nationals in February 2008, as Chief of Operations of EUFOR Chad/Central African Republic Multinational-Centre Battalion, the initial entry force in 2008. Deployed once again in Operation Licorne in Abidjan in 2010, he was deployed to Mali at the outset of Operation Serval in January 2013 where he commanded the initial Forward Joint Command Element, then the interallied theatre coordination structure in Bamako until the signing of the Ouagadougou interim Peace agreement. Nominated as Brigadier General in 2020, he deployed to Lebanon as the UNIFIL Force Chief of Staff and French Senior National Representative in July 2020. He is currently serving as the Deputy Commanding General of Readiness and Plans for the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart as of 17 July 2021.
General Fagué’s joint assignments include four tours in the French Joint Staff in Paris : in the International Relations directorate, as officer in charge of the United Nations from 2001 to 2004 ; in the Operations directorate, as officer in charge of Defense planning, pre-positioned Forces and Multinational affairs within the Plans and Policy Division from 2008 to 2010. As such, he was the main Defense planner for the French full reintegration of NATO Command Structure in 2009 ; as the Chef de projet for the transformation of the Armed Forces Strategic Command structures for Operations from 2013 to 2014. Finally, he was assigned to the Plans Directorate’s Capability Planning Division from 2016 to 2018, where he oversaw national intelligence capabilities.
His military education includes the Staff School, the Advanced Staff College, and the United States Marine Corps Command and Staff College ("Distinguished Graduate”). Additionally, he served as a faculty member at the French War College in 2014-2015 and as a member of the 65th session of the French Centre for Higher Military Studies (CHEM) and the 68th session of the Institute for Higher National Defense Studies, before being appointed as CHEM Deputy Director in July 2018. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in foreign languages, a Masters degree in military studies from the University of Virginia and he teaches at Sciences Po Paris School of International Affairs.
His awards and decorations include the French Legion of Honor, the National Order of Merit and the Cross of Military Valor with two citations. Brigadier general Fagué is also Commander of the National Order of Merit of Senegal, Officer of the National Order of Mali, Knight of the Lebanese National order of the Cedar and he has been awarded the US Army Commendation Medal.
