Veterans Health Identification Card (VHIC)
In 2014, VA began issuing enrolled Veterans a newly redesigned Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) that totally eliminates the use of a Veteran's Social Security number (SSN). Similar to a typical health insurance card, the VHIC displays the Veteran’s Member ID and a Plan ID that reflects the Veteran’s enrollment in VA health care. The redesigned Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) should not be confused with the new Veteran ID Card (VIC), which will be offered to Veterans who do not have a VHIC, a retirement card issued by DoD or a driver’s license with a Veteran designation.
Effective 1 January 2020 when using the VHIC as Primary Identification you must also present ONE form of Primary Identification (Unexpired) from Below:
Driver's license, U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Card, Other Government ID. This ID can be issued by federal, state or local government agencies provided it contains a photograph, name, date of birth and address.
