Note: You should check the maps posted at self-clearing check stations for updated information. This schedule is subject to change for urgent training priorities. Just in case, it's recommended you call the Fort Johnson Game Warden Office prior to traveling long distance to hunt at Fort Johnson

This site provides information on open hunting seasons, maps and schedules of open or closed areas, and contacts at Fort Johnson for additional information. Please be sure to read all of the information here as well as the regulations for hunting, fishing, and trapping at Fort Johnson or Fort Johnson North before planning your trip.

Maps and Schedules

This years’ maps only depict all-weather roads and trails and hides the dirt trails annotated on previous years’ maps. Change can be frustrating, but this decision serves several purposes.  Most importantly, for hunters, it provides more access to huntable acreage since hunters can now sit along unmarked trails and not have to stay 100 feet from them.  It reduces confrontations between hunters by prohibiting hunters to drive down a dirt trail that someone may be hunting nearby.  For maintenance, prohibiting vehicles on trails that are not deemed all-weather, reduces the frequency and subsequent costs associated with repairing damage not associated with government activities. This decision also mitigates the risk of a hunter getting stuck on a muddy trail and having to call for recovery. This is particularly important when a JRTC rotation might start the very next day.  Finally, these map changes were only made to the lands owned by the U.S. Army and not any of the US Forest Service lands used for training. On Fort Johnson, with a few exceptions, areas are accessible by road or all-weather trail to within a maximum of 1 KM or 2/3 of one mile. Distances are further on Fort Johnson North, primarily because the road and all-weather trail network isn’t as robust, and hunters may have to walk up to 1.5KM or 1 mile, on occasion.

In the links below,  you will find two maps, one for the  Fort Johnson area  and another for the Fort Johnson North area. The date or dates listed on the map identifies the open and closed areas for that day or date range. The closed areas for that date will be indicated in light red. Once the map is displayed, you can right click on the map to access menu options such as zoom in, zoom out, and print.

Maps are posted at Self-Clearing Check Stations during hunting and non-hunting seasons. Maps may not be posted to this site during the non-hunting months. If maps are not posted,  you must call or make contact with the Game Enforcement Office to check what areas are open for recreational activities.
