Red-Cockaded Woodpecker

The only known federally-listed endangered species on Fort Johnsonis the Red-cockaded Woodpecker (RCW). The RCW prefers old (average age more than 80 years), red-heart infested longleaf pine for cavity construction and prefers pine stands 30 years of age or older for foraging; Fort Johnsonhas an abundance of each. The Endangered Species Management Component Plan (ESMCP) contains information on the status of the RCW on Main Post and Peason Ridge.

Louisiana Pinesnake

The Louisiana Pinesnake (LPS) is the only known federally-listed threatened species on Fort Johnson. The snake is restricted to a small portion of extreme east-central Texas and west-central Louisiana. Historic range of the species included nine parishes in Louisiana and 14 counties in Texas. Since 1993, LPS have been documented in four Louisiana parishes and six Texas counties. The ESMCP contains information on the status of the LPS on Main Post and Peason Ridge.
