Volunteers continue to provide food items to JBM-HH, NCR communities

On April 15, the USO-Metro and Capital Area Food bank hosted its monthly MILFAM Market event for the Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Military District of Washington and National Capital Region from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Tri-Services parking lot.

During this event, food items were distributed to service members from all military branches, reservists, National Guard, Family members, veterans, retirees and anyone with base access.

Attendees received fresh produce and many nonperishable items through a streamlined contactless delivery method. Food items can vary for each event because the USO tries to include a variety of food selections that are currently available or in season.

Each attendee is directed to drive up into a designated lane and to stay in their vehicles while volunteers safely load their prepackaged food items into their vehicles. COVID-19 restrictions and safety precautions are observed at all times and throughout the event.

This event started in November 2020 with a mission to help the growing community and to provide assistance during the most difficult year to those affected by COVID-19.

Within five months, the USO’s efforts have assisted and served more 1,250 Families in the community. Interest in this event has increased substantially as it continues to be one of the most attended community events of the year.

This monthly event also offers a community service volunteer project for the community volunteers who would like to give back to their community in one of the most compassionate and considerate ways possible. Volunteers included a diverse mix of retirees from the NCR.
