Rain causes flooding on joint base

Monday morning’s severe rain fall flooded a portion of the Henderson Hall Marine Corps side of the base.

A lower lot at Henderson Hall is subject to minimal flooding due to drainage patterns on the base. But due to the amount of rain that fell so quickly, the lot experienced sudden and extreme flooding Monday.

Four private vehicles and one government bus were reported to be submerged in the flood waters, along with two forklifts.

Buildings that surround the lot were evacuated during the height of the flooding. The water has receded and the surrounding buildings have been reopened.

Another area on base that experience flooding was the Henderson Hall gate at Southgate Road that prompted the closure of the inbound traffic lane for a while. Sheridan Road near the base’s main gate, Hatfield Gate, was also closed for a while and traffic had to be rerouted.

Numerous buildings across the base, to include Fort McNair in Washington D.C., were also affected by the rain.

Water in all areas has receded and cleanup is underway.
