WELCOME TO
UNITED STATES ARMY GARRISON - ITALY
Background
In 1951, the U.S. and Italy signed an agreement that the U.S. would operate lines of communication across Italy, and that the U.S. would occupy land near Livorno. This land became Camp Darby, located in Pisa, named for Brigadier General William O. Darby, who was killed in action in northern Italy on 30 April 1945.In 1955, all U.S. occupation forces in Austria were withdrawn upon the entry into force of the Austrian State Treaty. Under provisions of the agreement with Italy, Camp Darby was the initial reception station for soldiers, equipment and supplies returning from Austria.
In 1965, the Headquarters of USASETAF moved from Verona to Caserma Ederle which already existed as an Italian Army Base, which it remains today.
Population
USAG Italy is home to 15,000 Soldiers, Family members, Civilians, Local Nationals and Retirees. It is comprised of multiple sites geographically dispersed across Northern Italy. Caserma Carlo Ederle, Caserma Renato Del Din and Villagio Family Housing (Vicenza Military Community (VMC)) are located in Vicenza, 66 km West of Venice. Additionally, four small sites are located in Longare, Lerino, Torri di Quartesolo, and Arcugnano, all within 10 km of Vicenza. Camp Darby (formerly USAG Livorno) in Pisa was realigned under the command of USAG Italy as a satellite site and renamed Darby Military Community (DMC). The DMC includes Camp Darby, the Leghorn Army Depot and the PISA Ammo Storage Area. USAG Italy’s area of responsibility also includes support to Ghedi Air Base in Verona, the NATO Deployable Air Command & Control Center in Poggio Renatico, North of Bologna and the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps in Solbiate Olana, Southwest of Milan and deployment operations at Aviano Air Base near Pordenone.
Installation Access
Vehicles entering any USAG Italy installation are required to have either an adult authorized ID cardholder with sign-in privileges in the vehicle or an authorized visitor pass. To obtain a short-term visitor pass, the sponsor and visitor(s) need to sign in at the main gate and present the sponsor’s ID card, the visitor’s ID card or passport, and vehicle registration and proof of insurance of the vehicle driving onto the installation. The driver must also present a valid driver’s license. The visitor’s ID / passport will remain at the main gate until sponsor and visitor sign-out. Short-term visitor passes expire the day they have been issued at 2359. Sponsors WILL escort their visitor at all times, physically sign them out in order to retrieve their ID/Passport, and ensure they leave the installation before midnight. Failing to do so will be considered a pass violation and lead to loss of sign-in privileges of the sponsor.
For long-term passes, sponsors must sign in visitors at the main gate (same procedure as above) and inform the security guard that they intent to request a long-term pass. The guard will then provide a photocopy of the visitor’s passport. Sponsor and visitor(s) proceed to the Installation Access Control Office (IACO) during normal duty hours (see below) or MP Station after duty hours. After receiving a long-term pass, sponsor and visitor(s) must return to the main gate to pick up the visitor’s passport the same day before 2359. The maximum number of visitors one sponsor can sign on is four.
