TRAINS
- Buy your tickets at station ticket counters, self-service kiosks, or online.
- Traditional paper tickets must be stamped at the green/yellow validation machines on the platform before boarding. For digital regional tickets, you must activate/check-in your ticket via the mobile app before the scheduled departure time.
- Always ensure you are boarding the correct train number and the specific class of car listed on your ticket.

- Trenitalia (Regional & High-Speed): http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en
NOTE: Unlike past policies, if you board a train with the wrong ticket time or category, conductors can no longer simply charge you the price difference on the spot. You will face steep, mandatory fines. Always verify your train number on the platform display before stepping on board.
PLANES
Flying throughout Europe is incredibly convenient and affordable, provided you understand the operating models of budget carriers. Use reliable flight search engines to compare your options:
- Google Flights: www.google.com/flights
- Skyscanner: www.skyscanner.com
- Kayak: www.kayak.com
Budget Airline Best Practices:
- Airport Locations: Discount airlines frequently fly out of smaller secondary airports located far outside major city centers (e.g., flying into BVA instead of CDG for Paris). Factor the cost and time of ground transportation into your total budget before booking.
- Luggage Constraints: Read baggage policies strictly. Budget airlines charge heavy premiums for carry-on bags that do not fit under the seat.
- Check-In Policies: Always check-in online via the airline's app 24 to 48 hours prior to your flight. Doing so at the airport desk can incur a manual check-in fee upwards of €50.
LOCAL BUSES
- Purchase tickets ahead of time at local tobacco shops (marked with a large "T" sign outside), newsstands, or neighborhood coffee bars.
- Most modern Italian city buses now feature contactless payment readers on board, allowing you to tap your phone or contactless credit/debit card to pay for a fare instantly.
- Traditional paper tickets must be inserted into the small stamping machines on the bus immediately upon boarding. Un-validated tickets will result in heavy fines if checked by transit officers.
- Use Google Maps or local transit apps (like MooneyGo) for the most accurate public bus routes and schedules. Keep in mind that schedules are estimates - buses may run behind schedule, so plan for extra transit time.
