Labor Day celebrates the accomplishments of the American worker and their profound impact in the development of our Nation. It is a day where we can truly appreciate how far we have come as a country.

While we welcome the long weekend as a reprieve from work, we often forget that it is also a celebration of the American workforce. As you contemplate your activities for this upcoming holiday weekend, please take a moment to remember all who have helped us achieve the world-class status our Nation enjoys today.

Labor Day signifies the unofficial end to the summer season. It provides that last chance to fire up the barbecue grill, take one more short vacation, or just relax before summer turns into autumn. Unfortunately, the Labor Day weekend is often spoiled by accidents.

According to the National Safety Council, nearly 400 deaths result from motor vehicle collisions over Labor Day Weekend. Make sure you take a little extra time in your holiday preparation to think about your safety and the safety of your loved ones. Don't drink and drive! Be aware of the potential hazards and drive sensibly and defensively.

Prior to the Labor Day weekend, I ask all directors and supervisors to reinforce the importance of safety with all personnel; to include military and civilians.

Talk to your people about their activities and review safety practices. Ask the important Who, What, When, Where, and How questions as they relate to their weekend plans and help them if you feel they haven't covered all the bases.

I extend my deepest gratitude to you for your service and sacrifice. I am proud and humbled to serve alongside each and every one of you. You are all part of the best "team of teams," and we always succeed together! I want you and your family to have a safe and happy holiday.
