BATTALION HISTORY

The 5th Regiment of Artillery was formed in mid-1861 and fought in countless battles during the American Civil War, including Antietam and Gettysburg. Elements of the regiment deployed to the Spanish-American War but did not receive credit for the campaign.
The regiment was reconstituted on 27 February 1924 and organized on 1 July 1924 in the Regular Army as the 5th Coast Artillery. The unit received a campaign streamer for World War Two. In 1952 the regiment deployed to Korea and remained there for several years after the war ended.
In November of 1988 the 4th Missile Battalion, 5th Air Defense Artillery was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division. The unit was a Short-Range Air Defense, or SHORAD, unit at the time. 4-5 fought in Desert Storm and they also served during the Invasion of Iraq in 2003. The unit was reassigned to the 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade in 2008.
