BATTALION HISTORY

The 20th Engineers traces its origins to 15 August 1917. The 20th EN Regiment served the Allied Expeditionary Force across France with a primary mission of forestry during WWI. On 6 July 1943, the regiment landed onto the beaches of Sicily and later landed on Omaha beach on June 6th, 1944. The battalion fought across France, Belgium, and Germany. In 1966, 20th deployed to Camp Ranh Bay, Vietnam, and served in nearly all major campaigns, earning 14 battle streamers. In October 1990, 20th deployed to Saudi Arabia for operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The battalion provided mobility support along key routes up into Iraq. In 2004, 20th Engineers deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, for Operation Iraqi Freedom II where they conducted FOB force protection, counter-mortar patrols, EOD escort and infrastructure projects. In October 2006, 20th Engineer Battalion deployed in support of OIF 06-08. The unit constructed coalition outposts and joint security stations. In January 2010, 20th deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 09-11 as Task Force LUMBERJACK, where they cleared IEDs along routes in the most congested areas of the theater. From February to November 2018, 20th Engineer Battalion Headquarters and Headquarters Company deployed to Afghanistan for Operation Freedom’s Sentinel serving as the Headquarters for all Route Clearance.
