HOSPITAL CENTER HISTORY

The 809th Medical Service Detachment was activated 22 November 1944 in England and redesignated the 809th Hospital Center on 10 April 1945. It was inactivated on 12 November 1945 after providing command and control to Army hospitals in France during the Rhineland Campaign.

On 1 April 1951 it redesignated the 9th Hospital Center and activated 1 May 1951 at Fort Sam Houston, TX. On 30 May 1952 it was assigned to the Medical Division, U.S. European Command.  Moved to Landstuhl, Germany, it was responsible for all activities at Landstuhl and four other general hospitals supporting U.S. Army Europe.  From 1952 to 1970 it was based at Heidelberg or Landstuhl, responsible for medical support in varying areas. In 1961 medical support areas in France were split out of the 9th, and in 1962 the 549th Hospital Center was merged into the 9th. At that point the 9th was the largest medical command in the Army, responsible for most hospital and clinic support to U.S. Army Europe.

On 15 Dec 1970 the 9th was absorbed into Headquarters U.S. Army Medical Command, Europe. However, USAMEDCOMEUR was not a go-to-war organization, and the 9th (with two personnel) was retained for wartime mobilization. It was inactivated in the 1990s.

The 9th Hospital Center uncased its colors on 16 April, 2019, at Fort Cavazos, formerly Fort Hood.
