Storm Water Pollution
Why does it matter to you, our Soldiers, and the Fort Cavazos community?
The Fort Cavazos MS4 transports storm water through a system of pipes, ditches, and tributaries to local lakes, which provide drinking water, wildlife habitats, training opportunities, and recreation for the community. Unfortunately, the MS4 also transports EVERYTHING that it picks up along the way, such as trash, debris, yard and pet waste, pesticides and herbicides, food waste, loose sediment or gravel, and petroleum or chemical spills. The trash and debris carried by storm water contaminates our surface waters and can also build up in the storm drains, resulting in infrastructure damage, flooding, and erosion, and create roadway hazards.
Best Management Practices for Home and the Workplace
Pollution Prevention Efforts
-
Solid waste and recycle container management
-
Pick up trash/debris/waste in areas of operation
-
Properly clean-up and dispose of yard/green waste
-
Clean-up spills immediately and sweep up excessive sediment
Pollution Prevention Benefits
- Protects military training areas against erosion, pollutants, and damage that could impede training
- Protects our surface and drinking water sources
- Prevents roadway flooding and structural damage to culverts and drains
- Prevents traffic hazards resulting from flooding and damaged roadways
- Reduces manpower and resources required to repair damage to structures and roadways
