HISTORIC FORT CAVAZOS

Fort Cavazos was established in 1942 due to the need for land to train troops for mounted warfare brought on by World War II.

Fort Cavazos rests in the beautiful 'hill and lake' country of Central Texas between Killeen and Copperas Cove, surrounded by the bustling cities of Austin, Waco, Dallas and San Antonio. This region offers residents a diverse array of activities. Explore the nearby lakes, cultural and historic sites, or try your hand at indoor and outdoor recreation activities both on post and in the surrounding communities.
TRAINING

Fort Cavazos covers a total of 340-square miles and supports multiple units, a corps headquarters and a robust mobilization mission.

The Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center opened in 2016, offering the Fort Cavazos community state of the art facilities.

THE GREAT PLACE

Fort Cavazos is the Army's premier installation to train and deploy heavy forces. A 214,968-acre installation, this is the only post in the United States capable of stationing and training two armored divisions.

The rolling, semi-arid terrain is ideal for multifaceted training and testing of military units and troops.

Additionally the Killeen, Copperas Cove, Harker Heights, Belton, Gatesville, Temple and Lampasas communities that surround us are a model of support for Army Families. One look is all it takes to discover how we earned our famous nickname, "The Great Place."
