Brig. Gen. Mark H. Landes
Commanding General, Security Force Assistance Command
Brigadier General Mark H. Landes was commissioned in the Infantry upon graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1990. Brig. Gen. Landes has served in mechanized, light, airborne and Stryker units in numerous command, leadership and staff positions. His first assignments included Germany, Hawaii and Dahlonega, Georgia. He deployed as part of Operation Uphold Democracy to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, while assigned to the 25th Infantry Division in 1994.
Brig. Gen. Landes served as a Field Grade Officer in the first unit that fielded the Stryker vehicle, conducted the Stryker certification and validation training, and deployed to conduct combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004. Upon redeployment from Iraq, he served as the Brigade Executive Officer followed by an assignment as an exchange officer with the Australian Army. He then commanded 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, leading the battalion in Iraq as part of the 2007 “Surge,” conducting operations in the Diyala Province.
Following Battalion Command, Brig. Gen. Landes was assigned to the Operations Group of the Joint Readiness Training Center. In 2011, he assumed command of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division – the Bulldog Brigade – and deployed the brigade to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Logar, Wardak and Bayman Provinces.
Following Brigade Command, Brig. Gen. Landes was a Fellow at Yale University and then served as the Executive Officer to the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, Gen. Daniel Allyn, from 2014 to 2016. Most recently, he served as the Assistant Division Commander (Support) in the 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss, TX with a short deployment to Jordan in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. He assumed duties at Fort Bragg on 15 July 2018 with the Security Forces Assistance Command.
Brig. Gen. Landes’ military education includes the Infantry Officer’s Basic and Advanced Courses, Command and General Staff College, and US Army War College Fellowship to Yale University. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science from the US Military Academy at West Point and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Tennessee Technology University.
