Colonel Michael Simmering

Deputy Commanding Officer - Support, 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss

Col. Michael Simmering currently serves as the Deputy Commanding Officer – Support of 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.

Col. Simmering commissioned as an Armor Officer in 1993 following graduation from the United States Military Academy. His first assignment was with 1st Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Bliss, Texas, where he served as a Tank Platoon Leader and, later, Scout Platoon Leader. In 1995, Col. Simmering moved with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment to Fort Carson, Colorado. While at Fort Carson, he continued his service as a Company Executive Officer and Assistant Squadron Operations Officer.

Following graduation from the Armor Officer Advanced Course, Col. Simmering served in operations positions within III Corps, ultimately commanding B Company, 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment. Following company command, he served as an Observer/Controller at the Combat Maneuver Training Center, Hohenfels, Germany, from 2001 to 2003.

In 2004, Col. Simmering returned to Fort Carson where he served as the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regimental Plans Officer and the 2nd Squadron Operations Officer. While serving as a Squadron S-3, he deployed to Iraq from 2005-2006 to the Tal Afar District of Ninewah Province, Iraq. Upon redeployment, he moved with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment to Fort Hood, Texas. While at Fort Hood, Col. Simmering continued service as a Regimental S-3 and Regimental Executive Officer to include deploying with the Regiment in 2007 to Mosul, Iraq.

In 2008, he served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for the 4th Infantry Division at Fort

Carson. From 2009-2012, he commanded the 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment deploying to the Arghandab District of Khandahar Province, Afghanistan. Later, Col. Simmering assumed duties as the Division G-3, 4th Infantry Division. Following Senior Service College, he served as a Deputy Command Center Director, United States Northern Command. Following USNORTHCOM, Col. Simmering served as the Commander, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Georgia, and the Deputy Commander/Chief of Staff for the Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk, Louisiana. He also served as the Commander, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division from July 2017 until June 2019 deploying in support of Atlantic Resolve and Operation Spartan Shield.

Col. Simmering most recently served as the Commander Operations Group for the National Training Center, Fort Irwin, California, from June 2019 until June 2021.

His military education includes the Armor Officer Basic Course, Armor Officer Advanced Course, Command and General Staff College, and the Joint Advanced Warfighting School, National Defense University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Management from the United States Military Academy as well as Master’s degrees from Kansas State University and the National Defense University.

Col. Simmering’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (3 Oak Leaf Clusters), Bronze Star (1 OLC), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal (4 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (4 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (1 OLC), the Parachutist’s Badge, Air Assault Badge, and the Combat Action Badge.
