Colonel Alexis Rivera Espada began his military career by enlisting in October 1986, as an Infantryman and served with the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. He attended Columbus State University and was later commissioned as a Distinguished Military Graduate into the Armor branch in December 1997.

Colonel Rivera’s most recent assignment was as the Director of the Maneuver Battle Lab, Fort Benning where he where he supervised live, virtual, and constructive experimentation in support of the Army Futures Command (AFC). Before becoming the Director, he served as the Chief, Heavy Systems Branch Chief for the Maneuver Requirements Division (MRD). His most recent command experience was of the 1st Battalion, 35th Armor Regiment. Fort Bliss, from June 2016 – July 2018.

His career has bridged operational and institutional forces in various assignments in Infantry and Armor units. His operational experience includes service in the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia;  1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas; 1st and 3rd Brigades, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas;  and 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas. Colonel Rivera’s operational deployments include multiple tours in the middle east and participated in Operation Just Cause, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Spartan Shield, and Operation Inherent Resolve.  

His military education includes training at the Armor Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Air Command and General Staff College, and the National War College. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (History) and a Master of Public Administration (Government) from Columbus State University, a Master of Operational Art and Science from Air Command and Staff College, and a Master of Science in National Security Strategy with a minor in Health Strategy from the National War College.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Award, and the Army Superior Unit Award. His badges and other decorations include the Combat Infantry Badge, Combat Action Badge, Combat Parachutist Badge, the Ranger Tab, Air Assault Badge, and Jordanian Jump Wings.
