Fort Belvoir Gates: Frequently Asked Questions
Fort Belvoir Gate FAQs:
Where can I find the most updated Gate hours?
Download the MyArmyPost app which is available for all iPhone and Android users. It provides the most current information and pushes alert notifications.
What can I do to help ease congestion?
Follow the laws of the road. Zipper merges allow traffic to flow more freely. Stay off electronic devices during the daily commute. Treat gate staff with respect.
Why is traffic backed up at 6 a.m.?
With minimal security staff (28 total) and overtime not authorized, the gate hours begin at 0630. Evening shift ends at 0600. Additional gate guards are needed to extend hours and/or open additional gates. This staffing shortage is due in part to a hiring freeze and lack of available applicants.
Where can I apply for Gate security positions?
Fort Belvoir open positions are posted on our website at the link below:

Why does Tulley Gate converge down to one lane at the entrance and exit?
The security barriers need repairs. The serpentine is required to reduce speeds over these barriers and prevent accidents or damage to vehicles.
When will the barriers at Tulley Gate be repaired?
The company that installed the barriers is in a contract dispute and is in a “no-work” status until the dispute is resolved. This has affected multiple installations on the east coast. During this dispute, no repairs can be made, and no other companies can be brought in. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers did install a steel plate and asphalt over the barriers to reduce further damage, but reduced speeds are still needed until further repairs can be made.
Why isn’t Pence Gate open?
Traffic studies show the intersection cannot safely support left-turn traffic during peak hours. Queuing space is limited, and previous operations caused repeated accidents. A traffic study (conducted every six months) showed Lieber Gate only adds an additional three seconds to hospital travel time, compared to Pence Gate.
Why isn’t Walker Gate open?
Walker Gate, previously opened for morning commutes, was recently closed due to vandalism that destroyed ballistic glass in the gatehouse. Repairs require new funding, and the incident remains under investigation.
Why isn’t Telegraph Gate open?
Telegraph Gate was constructed for quick security to help alleviate congestion. It lacks running water and restroom facilities. A work order for permanent facilities has been submitted but staffing and funding constraints prevent reopening.
How can I submit my feedback?
Please submit your feedback through the Department of War's Interactive Customer Evaluation website. Comments are read by the Chief of Physical Security and the Garrison Command Team. Garrison Town Halls are held quarterly; the next Town Hall is scheduled for March 26, 2026.
How Can I Help?
Gate staffing is not a tasking mission. Fort Belvoir cannot direct tenant units to provide Soldiers, as they report to higher-level commands. Until guard vacancies are filled, gate operations rely on Service members who volunteer from their organic units. Leaders willing to support this effort—even on a limited basis—can make an immediate impact on traffic flow and safety. Units interested in assisting should contact Lt. Col. Julie Austin, Director of Emergency Services, or Fort Belvoir Garrison Command Sergeant Major Command Sgt. Maj. Brandon Creel.
